Friday Harbor High School grads ready to roll

posted 06/10/02
Hundreds of friends and relatives gathered in Turnbull gym Saturday, June 8, 2002 to cheer on the 67 graduates of the Class of 2002. Three co-valedictorians Reuben Silverman, Zac Williams and Andrew Downsworth spoke.

Speaking of imagination, dreams and the future, Downsworth said, "We may not save the world in the process but we can come pretty close."

Silverman likened the challenges facing the class to the ones facing the crew in the second Star Trek movie The Wrath of Khan. Having to mature and having some of the same crew around --" A lot of us are going to Western" -- were a few of the similarities. "We will boldly go where we've never gone before," he said.

Williams spoke of the value of helping hands. "Let other people into your dreams and you can reach higher heights."

More than $180,000 in scholarships were handed out. The two largest scholarships were a four-year all inclusive scholarship from the IFC Foundation which went to Class President Sarah Werling and a $14,000 Bishop Fleet Foundation scholarship awarded to Nick Gislason. Dollars for Scholars handed out almost $25,000 in scholarships to students who had completed 80 hours of community service in their high school years.

The class chose former principal Ralph Hahn as their guest speaker. Hahn, who turned the podium to face the class during his speech, received a standing ovation.
