Two "chickens" led the perennial favorite - The Chicken Dance. Cake-eating and sauerkraut-eating contests were a messy highlight of the evening's activities. Contestants in the beer drinking contest guzzled down baby bottles of beer. night was the food-related contests. Oktoberfest is continuing a tradition that started on October 17, 1810 in Munich, Germany after the wedding of Princess Theresa of Sachsen-Hildburghausen and Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria. The 40,000 party guests had such a good time that the event was repeated every year. Now Oktoberfest is celebrated all over the world as a "People’s Festival " or "Volkfest. "
