After a year's absence, Oktoberfest returned to San Juan Island October 2, 2004. Van Alen Blaskepelle Oktoberfest Band and Dave Pratt’s strolling accordion provided music for the fundraiser which benefits the San Juan Lions, the Inter-Island Medical Guild, and Friday Harbor Kiwanis. Food and drinks came from the San Juan Brewing Company - Front Street Ale House.

Two "chickens" led the perennial favorite - The Chicken Dance. Cake-eating and sauerkraut-eating contests were a messy highlight of the evening's activities. Contestants in the beer drinking contest guzzled down baby bottles of beer. night was the food-related contests.

Oktoberfest is continuing a tradition that started on October 17, 1810 in Munich, Germany after the wedding of Princess Theresa of Sachsen-Hildburghausen and Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria. The 40,000 party guests had such a good time that the event was repeated every year. Now Oktoberfest is celebrated all over the world as a "People’s Festival " or "Volkfest. "
