Islanders of all ages danced to polkas played by the Blaskepelle Oktoberfest Band and participated in some of the messiest eating contests at the 2005 Oktoberfest Oct. 15, 2005. The main building at the county Fairgrounds took on a Bavarian look for the fundraising event.

Dave Pratt and Jim Carroll kept the event moving along, providing instuction for such things as the Chicken Dance and the saukerkraut eating contest. Pratt provided musical entertainment with his accordion.

Proceeds from the event benefit the San Juan Lions, the Inter-Island Medical Guild, and Friday Harbor Kiwanis. Oren and Peggy Combs' San Juan Brewing Company - Front Street Ale House - provided the food and drink.

Oktoberfest is continuing a tradition that started on October 17, 1810 in Munich, Germany after the wedding of Princess Theresa of Sachsen-Hildburghausen and Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria. The 40,000 party guests had such a good time that the event was repeated every year. Now Oktoberfest is celebrated all over the world as a "People’s Festival " or "Volkfest. "
