Sausages were flying through the air at the 2006 Oktoberfest October 14 in the county fairgrounds building. The annual fundraiser which benefits the San Juan Lions, the Inter-Island Medical Guild, and Friday Harbor Kiwanis drew more than 500 islanders of all ages. The Blaskepelle Oktoberfest Band performed. Dave Pratt, Lynda Guernsey and Jim Carroll kept the event moving along.

Oren and Peggy Combs' San Juan Brewing Company - Front Street Ale House - provided the drinks. Market Chef and Rocky Bay Cafe provided the food. Besides all of the dancing including the crowd favorite chicken dance, there were games to keep the crowd entertained. Couples caught sausages in cast iron pans. Cabbage relay races, playdough pretzel-making contests, and the blind-folded cake eating contest were highlights.

Oktoberfest is continuing a tradition that started on October 17, 1810 in Munich, Germany after the wedding of Princess Theresa of Sachsen-Hildburghausen and Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria. The 40,000 party guests had such a good time that the event was repeated every year. Now Oktoberfest is celebrated all over the world as a "People’s Festival " or "Volkfest. "
