Sponsorships needed for Orca Fest

PRESS RELEASE: A festive and now expanded annual tradition returns to the San Juan Islands in late May when Orcas and San Juan Island present events to both entertain and educate. The 14th Annual Orca Fest – now multi-island, international and centered on the three day Canadian holiday weekend of Victoria Day – offers activities for all ages Friday May 20 through Monday May 23.

The mission of the International Orca Fest of the San Juan Islands is to celebrate the waters and wildlife that enrich the lives of islanders and visitors. The festival promotes stewardship of our unique ecosystem through education, cultural events and activities.

A full schedule of activities is being finalized and includes several new additions, notably The Zambini Brothers Puppet show "Annie and the Enchanted Whale" (a favorite at Seattle’s Bumbershoot and Children’s Festival), The Whale Museum’s Whale Discovery Zone, the San Juan Orca Fun Run, and Orcas Island’s Environmental Fair.

Also new this year are music events such as electronic music from Friday Harbor’s Jim Nollman and Janus Kober and a twelve-piece swing band for dancing on Orcas Island. The San Juan Community Theatre also offers hilarious live musical theater with "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum."

The traditional annual activities will be back: the whale symposium with prominent educators and research scientists, marine science lectures, sea kayaking, whale and wildlife cruises, a children’s art show, crafts fair, and lodging specials at island inns and B&Bs.

Sponsorship packages for this year’s festival are available. Sponsorships lend support to the free admissions policy for most activities and will benefit the Orcas Island High School marine science program and also Friday Harbor High School’s Ocean Sciences Bowl team. This team recently won the Washington State competition (dubbed The Orca Bowl) and competed in the national contest in Mississippi.

Support for the festival has come from the Town of Friday Harbor and the San Juan Islands Visitors Bureau through the Hotel/Motel Tax Fund.

Events Producer Becki Day has been contracted to produce and market this year’s festival. "It’s sure to be a special year, combining tradition with new events and expanding to Orcas Island," comments Becki. To get information about sponsorships, volunteering, performing, or participating contact Becki at 360-378-9519 or beckiday@rockisland.com and also check out the festival website: www.orcafest.com.
