The first runners across the finish line Sunday, June 5 were also the youngest. A new feature of the San Juan Island Marathon - the Kids Marathon and Fun Run - took place immediately after the start of the full- and half-marathon.

Students were encouraged to walk, jog or run a one-mile loop around the playground during recess or lunch and fill in a "Walkers Club Card." Completion of five cards (25 miles) by Friday, June 3, enabled the children to complete the final 1.2 miles of the 26.2 miles (the actual distance of a marathon) on Sunday, June 5.
