Orange County man beats heat, wins Island Loop RunMatt Pranger photos 1 |2 |3
Derek DeCicco breezed through unusually warm temperatures and won the 8.8-kilometer Island Loop Run Saturday, Aug. 16. DeCicco, of Orange County, Calif., didn't mind the heat as he completed the course in 29 minutes, 53 seconds. "It was pretty nice. It was nice to run in the trees," said DeCicco, who is training for the Long Beach marathon. The first woman to cross the finish line hails from Atlanta, Georgia and knew how to beat the heat. Kim Lupo, 33, Seattle, finished in 46 minutes, 46 seconds. "It was a great race, a great course," Lupo said. Jesse Buffum of Lopez Island was the first male islander to finish and Jane Hutchison was the first female islander to complete the 5.5-mile race.
