Second annual San Juan Marathon attracts more runners

This was the 42-year-old Camas man's 12th marathon and his first win. He collapsed in the Boston marathon six weeks ago. He finished this marathon in 3:06:32.
Friday Harbor High School student Lucas Franco (pictured at right with Jesse Buffum) kept up his winning streak. For the second year in a row he won the half marathon. His time was 1:22:53. He said running the course for the second year helped. "I knew what was coming next," he said. Jessie Swan of Seattle was the first woman to finish the half marathon with a time of 1:23:45. Heather Griffin of Seattle was the first woman across the marathon finish line with a time of 3:12. This was her first win. She has competed in five marathons and three ironman competitions. The 32-year-old hopes to return next year. She originally signed up for the half-marathon because she wasn't feeling up to the full 26 mile run. "I changed my mind this morning," she said.
Ross Lockwood was the first local man to reach the finish line. Lockwood's time was one minute more than last year. A friend jokingly attributed it to the fact Lockwood turned 40 this year. For the second year in a row, Jane Hutchinson was the first local woman to cross the finish line. She trimmed four minutes off her 2003 time. She had signed up for the half marathon and changed her mind Saturday night. She drew on her experience from last year. "Knowing the course, I looked forward to Pear Point," she said. More than 312 runners participated in the event. Of those 82 signed up for the full marathon. The event, organized by Clarke Gilbert, is a fundraiser for the Community Arts and Theatre Society (CATS). The group helps support San Juan Community Theatre. | |

San Juan County Amateur Radio Operators took care of communications during the run. The ten volunteers - Nancy and Charlie Lindenberg, Marty Percich, Monte Midkiff, Bob Norbom, Frank Beatty, John Stimpson - used their ham radios to keep marathon organizers up to date on the location of the runners.
