Troy Scott of Seattle, in his first full-marathon, won the San Juan Island Marathon in three hours, four minutes and 46.7 seconds today, Sunday, June 5, 2005.

"This was my first road marathon," said Scott, who ran some trail races in Alaska.

The 28-year-old muscled through the final six miles of the up-and-down course. "The last six miles are really tough…. It's a really challenging course," Scott said.

Scott was moving fast even before starting the race. He left Seattle at 4 a.m. and was cited for speeding before reaching the 6 a.m. ferry in Seattle.

Alicia Heilman of Bellingham crossed the finish line in 3:22:18.3 and captured the women's title. Robert Palmquist of Seattle placed first in the half-marathon, finishing in 1:21:05.7 and Heidi Bathum of Sammamish won the women's division in 1:39:20.3.

The first islander to finish the full-marathon also completed his first 26-mile race. "I've never done anything close to this," Chris Guidotti said after finishing in seventh. "It was fun but it hurt."

Guidotti crossed the finish line at the San Juan County Fairgrounds at three hours, 24 minutes and 18 seconds. That's the same place of his longest previous race - the 5.5-mile Island Loop Run.

"I was cramping at 19 miles," Guidotti said. "I went out way too fast. I'm happy I finished."

Lucas Franco, the winner of the 2003 and 2004 half-marathons, finished this year's 13-miler third overall and was first among islanders. The 19-year-old ran the route in 1:25:12.4.

Jane Hutchison, for the third consecutive year, recorded the fastest half-marathon time for a local woman -- 1:52:35.2. The 43-year-old also won her age group.

Hutchison's intimate knowledge of San Juan Island's terrain -- she can often be seen training for triathlons -- helped her pass mainlanders. "I was able to overcome some of the women on the hills," she said.

"I'm ready for the triathlon," Hutchison said of the Ninth Annual Jon Pettingill Memorial Triathlon on June 18.

Four hundred runners and walkers competed in the half- and full-marathons marked by low 50-degree temperatures and overcast skies. "It was a good run," said Harvey Brown, the 11th finisher in men's half-marathon. "I liked the temperature."

Alicia Heilman and Mark Doherty of Bellingham were all smiles after she was the first women and he was the fifth man to finish the marathon.

Robert Palmquist of Seattle was rewarded with a hug after he won the men's half-marathon with a time of 1:21:05.7.

Lucas Franco of Friday Harbor was the first islander across the finish line in the half-marathon with a time of 1:25:12.4.

Heidi Bathum of Sammamish was the first woman across the finish line for the half-marathon.

Scott makes the final turn.
