Tacoma friends win San Juan Island's full, half marathon

Story and photos by Matt Pranger

posted 06/05/2006
A pair of Tacoma friends finished first in the half and full divisions of the San Juan Island Marathon Sunday, June 4. Mike Lynes, 40, won and full marathon in two hours, 43 minutes, 22 seconds, a course record, and Drew Wartenburg, finished first in the half marathon in 1:16:01.

A year ago Lynes, a veteran of 20 marathons, underwent surgery to repair cartilage in a hip socket and didn't know if he could run another 26.22 miles. Two days after his 40th birthday he proved he still can go the distance on one of the most difficult courses of the Northwest.

"It's a tough, challenging," he said of the course that winds over San Juan Islands hills and valleys. "You get to use all your muscles and beat them up."

Wartenburg is training for a full marathon and found the rain-slickened course challenging. "It beats up your legs running on wet pavement," Wartenburg said of slipping on San Juan Island's chip-sealed roads.

Jodi Brautaset, 30, Mount Vernon, topped running in this year's Boston Marathon by setting a personal record and winning the women's division of the San Juan Island full marathon in 3:30:40. "I had a great time…. It's a beautiful course to run," Brautaset said after her first marathon victory.

Brautaset commended the numerous marathon volunteers. "There are a lot of great volunteers on the course," she said.

Brittany Dick, 20, Amherst, Wisconsin, finished first among women running the half marathon. The Ripon College junior, who is researching killer whales at Lime Kiln State Park this summer, also found the challenging. "This is the hardest course I've ever done," said the collegiate track and cross-country runner.

"The weather conditions were ideal," Dick said.

Ross Lockwood, San Juan Island, was the first islander to complete the full marathon. The 42-year-old crossed the line at 3:17:53 and met his goal of finishing under three hours, 18 minutes.

Chris Guidotti, 47, San Juan Island, placed second among islanders running the full course. He finished in 3:29:05. Greg Ripley, Lopez Island, was the third islander in 3:37:27.

Jane Hutchison, 47, placed third overall among women running the full marathon and again placed first among island women. She finished in 3:49:49. "I beat my best time because I was able to focus on it," she said. "I held my own on the hills."

Ron Wilson, 40, San Juan Island, was the first islander to finish the half marathon in 1:43:38. Brian Goodremont, 29, San Juan Island, was the second island male in 1:44:54 and Dennis Dahl, 58, Orcas Island, was third in 1:45:58.

Suzanne Strom, 46, Lopez Island, finished first among island woman in 1:50:20. Jill Schober, 39, Lopez, placed second among island women in 1:52:24 and Sarah Jarman, 27, San Juan Island, was third in 1:52:32.

One marathoner went a bit further than the other runners to compete in the islands. Maurice Duteau traveled 5,700 miles from Shanghai, China to run the marathon and visit his sister Jacqueline Harvey of San Juan Island. "I probably wouldn't have come if not for her support," Duteau said.
