Jane Hutchinson congratulates Manuh Santos after he wins the SJI marathon this morning. Manuh Santos won the 2008 San Juan Island Marathon with a time of 2:38:51 beating his personal best of 2:39:14 which he set in the Yakima River Canyon Marathon. The 28-year-old lived in the U.S. illegally since he was 16 according to a story in the Yakima Herald. He returned to Mexico in February and was allowed to return in April after an appeal. He's won three of the four marathons he's run in his life, he placed second in the other one. Orcas Island Greg Ripley was the first county resident to cross the finish line in the marathon with a fifth place finish and a time of 3:14:59. His pace was 7:26. Debbie Polson of Crawford, Colorado was the first woman to cross the finish line in the marathon. Her time was 3:24:16 and finished 13th. This was the 10th state she has run a marathon in. Asked to comment on the course, she said, "It's easier than Shiprock, New Mexico."
Kevin McCrabbe of BonneLake won the half-marathon. "It's a beautiful course, but windy today. It was always in your face," he said. "I must have looked hungry, cows ran away from me."
Runners head down Argyle Avenue at the start of the San Juan Island Marathon at 8:30 a.m. this morning. | |
