Peaceful peace vigil in Friday Harbor

posted 03/12/03
About 60 demonstrators from Orcas, Lopez and San Juan Island participated in a candlelight peace vigil Tuesday, March 11, 2003 in Friday Harbor. Drivers departing the ferries heard drumming and viewed a variety of signs protesting the potential war with Iraq. Other signs asserted the right of demonstrators to use the park.

Last week, a group of American Legion members loudly debated the appropriateness of using the park for a war protest. Many of the demonstrators chose to remain outside the park this week. Sheriff Bill Cumming and deputies were on hand this week to make sure everyone's rights were protected.
