Angler wins Nielsen/Barr by 1 ounce

Mark Friedl of Bellingham might not have won the 2005 Einar Nielsen/Becky Barr Memorial Fishing Classic Sunday, Sept. 24 if his 37-pound, 4-ounce king ate one less meal. Runner-up Chuck Payne of San Juan Island hooked a chinook one ounce lighter than Friedl’s during the final hours of the derby.

More than 280 anglers hauled in more than 100 fish and snagged more than $50,000 in prizes during derby, which raises funds for college scholarships.

Friedl was fishing in his 21st Nielsen/Barr Classic. "I haven’t missed one,” he said. “I have a shirt for every year."

This year he left with more than a shirt: His king -- the biggest he’s caught during all the Nielsen/Barr derbies -- netted him a fishing trip at Eagle Nook Resort.

Friedl knew he hooked "a big one" about Friday morning in Open Bay. The king took nearly 500 feet of line out. "He just went and stayed," Friedl said. "He wouldn’t come at all."

After fighting the fish for one hour, Friedl had reeled the fish close to his boat. Another fisherman came in for a look and his downrigger became tangled with Friedl’s line. "I thought it was all over," Friedl said.

The gear untangled and Friedl hauled the king on to his boat. "I was just lucky, I guess," he said.

The top 10 finishers, the weight of their king and their prizes are:

  1. Mark Friedl, 37-04, Eagle Nook Resort

  2. Chuck Payne, 37-03, Big Sky Ski Vacation

  3. Tom Gates, 36-15, San Juan Propane BBQ

  8. Chuck VanSoye, 30-08, Horizon Air Tickets

  9. Stuart Dunn, 28-11, Northwest Plumbing and Waterworks Water Softener

  10. Georgia Gilmore, 27-07, Browne’s Home Center BBQ
