San Juan County residents interested in helping victims of the terrorist attack can send donations to the Red Cross and/or donate blood.

Puget Sound Blood Center has sent a large part of its blood supply via truck to New York. Donors are needed to replenish the supply. A blood drive will be held on San Juan Island from noon to 6 p.m. Oct. 3. People interested in donating can contact Pat Ball at 378.4557.

Donations can be sent to National Disaster Relief Fund at the following address:

American Red Cross
PO Box 249
Anacortes, WA 98221

Checks can also be dropped off into the donation box in front of the Election's office at the Courthouse. The Courthouse is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Donors who want to direct their funds to be used solely for the New York victims should write New York Sept. 11, 2001 on the memo line of their check. For Washington, D.C. should write Washington, D.C. Sept. 11, 2001 on their check.

Medevac back in service

posted 09/12/01
Sheriff Bill Cumming said medevac flights were resumed mid-afternoon Tuesday to the San Juans. Essential public services were a top priority of the sheriff's department. "We've been under heightened awareness regarding the power stations and the water systems," he said.

The order by the FAA grounding all aircraft meant medical patients needing treatment in a hospital had to go by ferry. Resumption of the medevac flights was an important step, Cumming said.

"This has a profound effect on the emergency personnel," he said. "We all feel helpless. Our hearts and prayers are with the people of New York."
