More than 450 residents and visitors gathered at Friday Harbor High School's football field Tuesday evening. They heard community and religious leaders share their thoughts about "the outrageous act of hatred" that took place early today on the east coast.
The high school choir sang the national anthem at the ecumenical non-denominational community gathering.
Moments of silence allowed individuals to reflect on the tragedy caused by the terrorist attack on New York City and Washington, D.C.
Religious leaders from several island churches offered words of comfort and hope. St. Francis Church's priest noted several residents have lost close friends or family members.
Sheriff Bill Cumming said emergency personnel had heavy hearts today. He had been in contact with the state Emergency Operations Center and assured the crowd the Northwest was safe.
Dr. David Eden explained the stages of grief and encouraged people to be close to their friends and family. County Commissioner Darcie Nielsen and Town Councilmember Carrie Brooks both mentioned the need to resolve differences which divide the community.
Nielsen said, "I don't want to be anywhere but here, but my heart is in New York right now."
