San Juan county residents pause to remember

posted 09/14/01
Silence, 21 gunshots, and a sustained blast from the ferry were sounds community members heard as they gathered on the courthouse lawn yesterday afternoon. San Juan County joined with other communities statewide in tribute to America at 12:25 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14, 2001.

Flags hung from the roof of the courthouse as hundreds of participants, many wearing red, white and blue, honored the memory of those lost in Tuesday's terrorist attack. Sheriff's deputy cars with their lights flashing lined First Street. Two firefighters stood watch on Friday Harbor's antique fire engine.

The American Legion Color Guard gave a 21-gun salute. County Commissioner Rhea Miller shared a poem written by a Lopez Island resident. Commissioners Darcie Nielsen and John Evans also addressed the hundreds of people gathered on the east side of the courthouse.

Kathleen Wilson led the group in the singing of the national anthem and "God Bless America."

An interfaith gathering at Friday Harbor High School took place at the same time.
