Free lunch and practical solutions

posted 03/25/05
Firewise, Waterwise & Energywise: Practical Solutions for Living Safely & Sensibly in the Islands, workshops will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 2 at the Mullis Community Center in Friday Harbor. Workshops, information binders, and refreshments are free for all attendees. Free lunch for those who pre-register by Monday, March 28.

With drought just declared in Washington State, these workshops are very timely. Note that ALL of San Juan County is designated by the Department of Natural Resources as having high or extreme wildland/urban interface fire risk. We are approaching the summer/wildland fire season and the fire risk will further increase if we have drier/higher temperatures weather. Though San Juan County’s water supply is not affected by the lack of snow pack in the mountains, this will impact the hydro-electric energy we depend upon.

Firewise Workshops will include the Fire Ecology of San Juan County; Vegetation Management Strategies including landscaping design, plant selection and maintenance; Structural Strategies including fire safe design and construction materials; and Community Strategies for neighborhoods and homeowners associations in San Juan County.

The Waterwise Workshop will include the three tiers of water conservation for community systems which are metering, rate structures, and water audits. Also included for individual homeowners will be an array of practices and appliances for household and outdoor conservation. Rainwater catchment and graywater reuse will also be discussed.

The Energywise Workshop will include information on energy use statistics, typical problem areas, evaluation considerations, and corrective actions. Participants will learn how to conduct energy audits on homes or businesses, as well as an array of energy conservation practices and appliances.
