The third annual Zucchini 500 race at the San Juan County Fair drew entrants of all ages. Zucchini racers competed in one of two categories. Stock - a zucchini with wheels attached - or Unlimited - a DNA test would show zucchini appeared somewhere on the racer.

Islanders' creative spirit showed in the variety of entries. GI Joe took on Barbie. A contraption with raccoon feet, turkey claws and a dangling doll head raised a few eyebrows. One zucchini resembled a killer whale.

The racer made out of bicycle wheels and one made of a toy car differed greatly in size but tied repeatedly.

History was made when a motorized racer appeared in the race. The rules do not mention motorization. The remote control came in handy after a false start, the racer was able to drive back up the track for the restart.
