One of the highlights of the fair will be the Centennial Quilt exhibit in the Main Building. The quilt is made of 100 squares. Marie Johansen spearheaded the drive to create the quilt. Squares of muslin were handed out to quilters who created blocks representing images of the fair or the county Courthouse which is also 100 years old this year. A larger image of the quilt along with the names of all the quilters is posted here.

Note cards of the quilt will be available for purchase at the Wool shed during the fair for $3.50 each or five for $15.

Special Fair Event: Dedication of the Marie Boe Memorial 4-H Building

By Alice Hibberd

Please join adults and kids alike to honor a much loved community member, Marie Boe, who spent many years of her life dedicated to making San Juan County 4-H the vibrant youth program it is today. We cordially invite you to gather around the 4-H Building on Saturday, August 19 at approximately 12:30 pm. (Please check the Fairground kiosks to confirm the final time.) 4-H Leaders, 4-Hers and Fair Board Members will be conducting a special dedication of the new 4-H building in honor of Marie. The 4-H Leaders' Council will offer a beautiful plaque they have created to honor Marie Boe's contributions to 4-H and our youth. The Fair Board will be officially dedicating the building with a new building sign which reads, "Marie Boe Memorial 4-H Building." Come celebrate and maybe even become a part of a group photo for this very special occasion.

"Marie Boe was the WSU Extension Office Secretary in San Juan County for 31 years from 1963 to 1994," says Tom Schultz, WSU Extension Director. "Marie holds the record for the longest tenured employee in the county Extension office. She worked with and 'trained' six new county agents during that time. To say Marie was dedicated to 4-H is definitely an understatement. She was 4-H and led two generations of families in 4-H activities. Marie is fondly remembered by many of her 4-Hers who are now adults and were guided by her leadership for 33 years when she was a 4-H Leader. Marie was a 'hands on leader that always 'made the best a little better'."

Our current 4-H Program Coordinator, Cindy Gauthier, who presently juggles many of the tasks Marie Boe once did, shares her memories of Marie:

"(Marie Boe was) One of the most patient and loving women I have ever known. As a knitting and sewing member in her club, I asked her the same questions time and time again, and she very patiently would answer each one for me time and time again. Her love of children was apparent and kids were drawn to her for her gentle and caring ways. I have always thought of Mrs. Boe as the female version of Mr. Rogers from PBS fame. She always had a smile for you and an encouraging word.

"Marie Boe and 4-H went hand in hand. She was always available for everyone in her club, and would make special arrangements to meet with a frantic child when a stitch slipped or other urgent problem came up that could not be resolved without her care and knowledge. I also remember fondly the trips I took with her to Puyallup for State Fair events. She was a fun chaperone and always willing to put up with a group of silly girls in the dorm. What fun and learning we had, even when we had to drag sleeping bags, pillows and endless amounts of suitcases across the Fairgrounds to the dorms. As a youth I admired her as a leader and for her organization in the Extension Office. It always amazed me that she could find every publication in the never-ending filing cabinets in the office. I had hopes that one day, I could do the job Mrs. Boe did.

"So the years have gone by, and I forever hold my memories of Marie close to me. I would visit her when I could, and always enjoyed running into her around town when I would return to the island for a visit. It is strange how things turn out in our lives. I find myself reflecting on those years of my youth from the very office she spent her last years working for 4-H. I brought with me a photo of Marie to hang up in 'my' office. Now, as the 4-H Program Coordinator for San Juan County, I often glance at the photo of Mrs. Boe in action at the County Fair. She inspires me now as she did when I was a child. The shoes I have to fill are huge. If I can do just 50 percent of what Marie did for 4-H, I will be content."

Cindy Gauthier is just one of many, many community members who has such sweet and loving memories of Marie Boe's special ways. Please come and share your memories with others who will be gathered in celebration at the 4-H building on Saturday.

Memorial donations in honor of Marie Boe are still being accepted for the 4-H Endowment to support the 4-H program's growth. Please contact the WSU Extension office at 378.4414 or talk with 4-H staff at the Fair.

COUNTDOWN TO THE FAIR: 15 days to Opening Day

Be sure to check out Trash to Treasures. Clever islanders create a variety of art and practical goods from discarded items. A press release by Francine Hansen explains it all.

TRASH TALK

By Francie Hansen

I'm making you an offer that I hope is hard to refuse (okay, you cynics, don't say "watch me!"). As head of the Trash to Treasures booth for the San Juan County Fair, which is sponsored by the Solid Waste Advisory Committee (SWAC) -- and in conjunction with the San Juan Island Anti-Litter Initiative - I challenge both adults and children to go out and find "stuff"...at South Beach, Jackson Beach, the Thrift Store, your kitchen junk drawer, under the bed, your neighbor's yard sale, your garage, those broken toys or missing puzzle pieces…and turn it into a treasure. Litter works too!!

Ferry overload tickets, stickers, extra photos, and old stamps make great stationery collages; cans can be flattened and made into purses or briefcases; bottle caps are super earrings; and aluminum foil can be rolled and molded into sculpture. The possibilities are endless!

Once you've found some good "stuff," dig deep into those creative fissures in your brain and invent an art piece, a functional item, something that makes you laugh or proud. Add a little glue, feathers, wire, paper, string, material, tape, yarn, solder, paint...all of these do wonders for the discarded items needing rescuing!

We are a throw-away society…we're good at doing so with stuff as well as relationships. But I know on San Juan Island we're a unique population, and we have the potential to break that cycle and give a new lease on life to our discards. By simply looking again in a different way (you might try upside down and backwards), I know you'll figure something out.

Please join me on entry day at the Fairgrounds, Tuesday, August 15, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and bring in your masterpiece. I can't wait to see what you create...and hear the story. You might even win a prize! And if you get a chance, read The Velveteen Rabbit; it's inspiring too!

Devo'Rah with special guest Geoffrey Castle will perform from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, August 16, 2006. Devorah gets her nickname, Firecracker, because she brings to the stage an irrepressible energy that is often described as: "Explosive like fireworks on the 4th of July", or "Mercedes thunder when the racing package has just kicked in!" For Devorah, it's all about balancing mischief and musicality, and bringing the 'spirit of now' to each performance.

COUNTDOWN TO THE FAIR: 24 days to Opening Day

The Paul deLay Band has become known throughout the Pacific Northwest for its hard-hitting blues and R&B. The Portland-based group earned a reputation that extends far beyond the region: band leader deLay isranked among the finest blues harmonica players alive, and his work on the chromatic harp is considered by many to be unrivaled.

Duffy Bishop has been a Rocking R&B Belter since Hector was a pup. Yes, there are the inevitable comparisons to Janis (Duffy starred in a successful Seattle production of a play of the same name), Dusty, Bette and Carmen Miranda, but the comparisons don't tell the tale. Besides the voice, the energy and the showmanship, there's the heart and the passion that make her pure Duffy.
