An Eye-Opening Book-Signingposted 07/08/04
The Nautilus Award recognizes books which make a distinguished literary contribution to responsible leadership, spiritual growth, sustainability, conscious social change, and to the world of art, creativity and children's literature.
Treasure Forest is not the first, but the middle book of The Forest Inside trilogy, and Bordhi is at work on the next one, which will be a prequel. "The three books of the trilogy follow a Moebius sequence," explains Bordhi, "which means that the first moment of the prequel and the final moment of the sequel will be congruent, forming a never-ending flow of connections between events, characters, and themes." In case you don't know what a Moebius is, you might want to find out by meeting up with Bordhi this Saturday afternoon (July 10, 2004) for a book-signing celebration from 2 to 4 p.m. at Island Wools on Spring Street. She just published another knitting book, A Treasury of Magical Knitting, full of scarves, shawls, capes, footwear, and hats derived from the very same Moebius structure that defines her novels. She'll have paper, scissors, and tape handy for children from 2 to 102 who are willing to discover that what seems to be so really isn't, and what is so, is simpler than you can imagine. A variety of knitted pieces from her book will be on hand, inviting you to investigate the truth of this mystery.
A Treasury of Magical Knitting is the creation of a number of islanders: Vanessa Ament, well-known to islanders as a singer, dancer, and actress, modeled the knitted garments; Bruce Conway was the book designer; Megan Jones' baby llama beautifies the pages; Kim Norton helped with proofing; and Steve Brandt contributed one of the island photos that give the book 'breathing space' In fact, the book is may increase 'knitting tourism' to the island because of the breathtaking shots of island scenes. "I especially loved teaching math and writing," says Bordhi. "When I left the school, I went into the world to apply the skills I had learned - for a teacher learns anew what she teaches. I have to say that the Friday Harbor School District had a very good curriculum for me. The Mathland skills I taught in the elementary school were exactly what was needed for clearly explaining the patterns, relationships, and arithmetic of knitting patterns so that just about anyone could visualize and follow the instructions. And I applied the Six Traits writing skills again and again as a writer, in both my knitting books and my novel. It really tickles me to look back and see that all along I was training myself to do what I'm doing now, during the years of teaching kids." Bordhi will also be speaking to the Lions Club on Tuesday, July 13, 2004, at their midday meeting. Previews of all of Cat's books can be downloaded at catbordhi.com. |
