Gann to be awarded with state's highest honor

The late Ernest K. Gann is one of four Washington residents to receive the Medal of Merit Wednesday, July 9, 2003. Gov. Gary Locke will present the awards, the state’s highest honor for exceptional conduct in providing outstanding services to citizens. The other recipients are: former Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Thomas Foley, Nobel Prize-winning researcher Leland H. Hartwell Ph.D., veterans’ advocate Helmut "Brownie" Braunsteiner.

Gann was a best selling novelist and an avid aviator. He died in 1991 at his home on San Juan Island. He is survived by his wife Dodie Gann of San Juan Island.

The award ceremony takes place at 2:30 p.m. July 9 in the Temple of Justice, Capitol Campus Olympia.Gov. Gary Locke, Lt. Gov. Brad Owen, Secretary of State Sam Reed, Supreme Court Chief Justice Gerry Alexander and House Speaker Frank Chopp will be in attendance.
