Miller returns from New Zealand

posted 12/08/05
Former San Juan County Commissioner Rhea Miller has returned to Lopez Island after spending several months working with the people of Waitaha, the people predating the Maori in residence in New Zealand. Miller resigned her position as county Commissioner in July 2005. Since her return she has accepted two part-time temporary positions on Lopez Island and looks forward to being involved again in the Lopez community.

While in New Zealand, Miller was the keynote speaker, along with Sandy Bishop, for the National Housing Forum on November 18, 2005 in Christchurch, sponsored by the Tenants Protection Association.

Miller's work with the Waitaha was as a proofreader. She did minor editing on the manuscript of the second book of wisdom of the Waitaha. The book, Whispers of a Nation, is scheduled to be launched in June 2006. The first book of wisdom, Song of Waitaha, was released in 1994, and can be reviewed at www.songofwaitaha.co.nz.

Miller says, although she saw spectacular country and made close ties in New Zealand, with more trips to New Zealand likely in the future, Lopez remains home.
