Roy Matsumoto of San Juan Island was inducted into the Special Forces Regiment as an Honorary member and received a Green Beret. He joined the Army after being sent to an internment camp in 1942. An account in his own words of his World War II experience as one of the 14 Merrill's Marauders is posted on the Japanese-American Veterans Association Web site
Matsumoto, 91, received a letter last week informing him of the honor. U.S. Army Major General James W. Parker wrote:
It is my distinct honor to induct you into the Special Forces Regiment as an Honorary Member and award you the Green Beret.
Your selfless dedication to our Nation is greatly appreciated and not forgotten. Your distinguished service in the 5307th Composite Unit "Merrill's Marauders" and later with Detachment 202 (Office of Strategic Services) is an inspiration to all Special Operators. The accomplishments of you and your fellow comrades set the stage for today's Special Forces who are at the forefront of the War on Terrorism. Without men like you who have gone before us, we would not be on point for America today.
You are a distinguished member of the Special Forces Brotherhood. On behalf of all of us in Army Special Forces, rest easy "Green Beret." Job well done!
Matsumoto has received many honors for his distinguished military career. Details about his service are available in an excerpt from MIS in the War Against Japan
