Four years ago, Shay Hopkins and her mother escaped an unhealthy situation, moving from Scottsdale Arizona to Friday Harbor. Yesterday (Jan. 19, 2005), Hopkins was awarded the Violet Richardson Award from the Soroptimists of Friday Harbor in honor of her volunteer work. The Friday Harbor High School senior said, "I feel a really big responsibility to give back to the community that has given me so much."

Soroptimist President Judy Cornell said Hopkins "became a real person with hopes and dreams" after moving to the small island community. Cornell noted the numerous volunteer activities Hopkins has participated in, including the anti-smoking program for middle school students - Teens, Tobacco and the Media. She also serves on the Gates Grants Committee.

Cornell told the Soroptimists, Hopkins is an outstanding athlete. She was selected as a forward on the All-State second team. This is the first time a soccer player from Friday Harbor has received this honor. She was also selected by the coaches in the league as the league's Most Valuable Player. Her coach, Doug McCutchen says, "Not only is she a phenomenally gifted athlete, she is a stellar leader and scholar."

The Violet Richardson award honors young women, who are trying to make the world a better place, for their volunteer action within their community or school. This award is in honor of the president of the first Soroptimist club, Violet Richardson, who herself had a lifelong commitment to volunteering in her community.

Hopkins received a $750 cash award and advances to the Soroptimist Northwest Region level, where a $1,000 recipient will be selected. At that level an additional $1,000 will be contributed in honor of the recipient to her volunteer organization.

Shay Hopkins to compete in PLA scholarship program

posted 01/20/05
Friday Harbor High School Senior Shay Hopkins has been nominated to compete in national Principal's Leadership Award (PLA) scholarship program, sponsored by the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP). Herff Jones, Inc., funds the PLA program.

FHHS Principal Marilyn Luckman nominated Hopkins in the national competition. 150 national PLA winners will be chosen this spring to receive $1,000 college scholarships.

High school principals from across the country could nominate one of their student leaders. Nominees were selected based on their leadership skills, participation in service organizations and clubs; achievements in the arts and sciences; employment experience; and academic record. They also were required to write and essay.

"NASSP is proud to recognize the efforts of talented young people like Shay Hopkins," said Gerald N. Tirozze, executive director, NASSP. "She deserves to be commended for her excellence in the classroom and community."

In recognizing leadership in cocurricular activities as well as academic performance, the PLA scholarship recognizes the importance of a well-rounded education. Cocurricular activities are an essential part of the school curriculum.

While at Friday Harbor High School, Hopkins has been part of the Gates Grant Committee and the Learning Improvement Team. She has been a member of the National Honor Society for three years. Shay has been a participant on the girls varsity soccer team. This fall she plans to attend a four-year university.

NASSP, the preeminent school leadership organization, serves as the national voice for middle level and high school principals, assistant principals, and aspiring school leaders. NASSP promotes the intellectual growth, academic achievement, character development, leadership development, and physical well-being of youth through its programs and student leadership services. NASSP administers the National Honor Society, the National Junior Honor Society, and the National Association of Student Councils.
