Dawson drives away the competition

Tyler Dawson, a Friday Harbor 8th-grader, took first and second place in the youth division at the Vancouver, BC Modeler's Club Show this past weekend. But the Friday Harbor Middle School student didn't stop there - he beat everyone (including adults) by taking home the Best of Show People's Choice Award for his 'Alfa Romeo Diorama'.

The diorama drew crowds throughout the show. Tyler spent hours creating the intricate pieces. The diorama shows a garage where a car is being restored - complete with a parts car out in the yard. His attention to detail included using his computer to print out miniature copies of car magazines to place on the work benches.

His dad, Drew, said Tyler has been drawing cars since he has been able to walk. He has been building models since he was 5 years old and spends at least 10 hours a week working on designs.

He wants to attend Pasadena School of Design in California for automobile design and recently spoke to San Juan Island resident Bryn Barnard who is a graduate of the school.
