Cell phone telemarketing warning an Urban Myth

posted 12/10/04
An email making the rounds warns people that beginning Jan. 1, telemarketers will be able to call cell phones. The warning is an urban myth according to the FCC. While it is true cell phone companies will be compiling directories of cell phone numbers next year, the lists will not be sold to telemarketers. The numbers will only be available by calling 411.

The email encourages people to register their cell phone numbers with the FCC's National Do Not Call List. The listing is free and can be done online at www.donotcall.gov. The warning may be false, but registering phones on the list is legitimate.
