Westcott Bay Reserve Open To All

updated 09/16/01
Islanders and visitors strolled through fields and woods Saturday, Sept. 8, 2001 admiring art by northwest artists, eating oysters from Westcott Bay, sipping wine from San Juan Vineyards, and listening to music by the David Messmer Trio at the official opening of Westcott Bay Reserve. The outdoor sculpture garden at next to the arch at Roche Harbor Village is the brainchild of Kay Kammerzell and her husband Arnie Klaus.

Besides the sculpture garden, plans for the property include environmental interpretive displays and an Artist Center. A non-profit organization, the Westcott Bay Institute, has been set up to oversee the reserve.

Donations and volunteer labor have created the garden. Roche Harbor Village donated the land. Green Man Landscaping is designing the landscaping plan. Kammerzell says local Girl Scout Troops will plant native plants. Browne Lumber, Lawson Construction, Schuman Excavating, Harbor Rental and Ace Hardware have all helped with the project. Signs were donated by The Sign Co. Island bicycle donated a bike rake.
