Troop 90 snow camps

posted 04/10/03
A few weeks ago, 15 Boy Scouts from San Juan Island Troop 90, four adults and the sister of one of the scouts bundled up and set out for an adventure in the snow at Mount Baker. Carrying all of their gear they hiked in through new and unbroken snow until they found a site suitable for building snow caves.

They spent a day digging caves and building deluxe kitchen facilities. One of the scouts who had snow camped before, brought a small board to place on his snow countertop. Adult volunteer Cooky Gossom said he told her otherwise the hot stove would melt the counter top. after the building was done there was plenty of time for sledding and playing in the snow.

This is the fourth annual snow camping experience for the Scouts. Several of the boys who have extensive experience acted as mentors and leaders for the new scouts.
