Collector Inspector in Friday Harbor May 19

posted 03/14/03
Spring cleaning is around the corner. Sure, it's unpleasant work, but hidden in the back of that closet you'll find that heirloom your Aunt left you. It's been stashed away because you've not known its value, nor what to do with it, as it doesn't fit your lifestyle. Enter: The Collector Inspector!

Harry L. Rinker, star of his own show of that name on HGTV (Fridays at 5:30 PM), is returning to San Juan Island Monday, May 19, 2003. There will be two opportunities that day to bring your item(s) to the Gubelman Room in the San Juan Community Theatre:

  • 3 to 5 p.m. and/or again from
  • 7 to 9 p.m.

If you don't know about his national TV show, perhaps you have seen him conducting appraisals each year on KOMO-TV. Unlike some TV spokesmen, Rinker has a lifetime of credentials. A dedicated accumulator himself, Rinker serves as editor of the House of Collectibles' Official Rinker Price Guide to Collectibles and prepares their Official Price Guide to Antiques and Collectibles, both revised annually. Between 1981 and 1996 he edited fifteen editions of Warman's Antiques and Collectibles Price Guides and seven editions of Warman's Americana & Collectibles.

Showing the breadth of his knowledge, Rinker is also the author of Antique Trader's Guide to Games and Puzzles (1997), Hopalong Cassidy: King of the Cowboy Merchandisers (1995), The Official Price Guide to Flea Market Treasures, 5th edition (1999)and Warman's Furniture (1993). Additionally he is the author of a three-book series on Dinnerware of the 20th Century, Silverware, and Stemware (all 1997).

Last year one item was appraised at $23,000. Even if your item doesn't bring unexpected riches overnight, Rinker makes each appraisal interesting, educational, and fun! On top of that you can tell your friends and relatives that you had your items appraised by the star of a national television show.

CATS is sponsoring the event at $10 per item, with a three-item limit. Tickets will be available at the door.

More than $57K raised by Making Spirits Bright

posted 12/12/02
Once again the Festival of Trees was an entertainment success, and CATS has announced that the major fundraiser for the San Juan Community Theatre grossed in excess of $57,000. This figure includes monies earned from the auctions, tickets for both the event and its preview night, and sponsors. Still to be counted are miscellaneous sales and the raffle for the Erte sculpture which should put the total over the 2001 figure.

Such a triumph could not have been achieved without the hard work of hundreds of islanders. The program listed 73 Special Spirits and 95 contributors to the Silent Auction. To this number is added the 56 donors for the Live Auction, most likely every member of CATS who participated in one way or another, and the 31 chairpersons, each who enlisted help from scores of friends and associates.

The day after "Making Spirits Bright," members of CATS were involved in the necessary cleanup and preparing for the Teddy Bear Tea this Saturday, December 14 at 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Santa, Teddy Bears, Cider and Cookies will await our young children and those young in heart. Tickets are available at the Box Office 360.378.3210.
