San Juan Jazz Association may be gone, but its musical legacy will live on. The association's assets were liquidated and the proceeds will be used for music education in Friday Harbor Middle and High Schools. Association President Ary Hobbel handed Foundation President Carla Wright a check for $145,000 Monday, Dec. 21, 2004.

The newly created San Juan Island Community Foundation Designated Music Fund is to be used "only on, for and by the music department" of the two schools at the sole discretion of the department head. The funds will be invested and only 5 percent of the capital may be spent each year.

Hobbel said the association rounded the figure off to $145,000. The assets totaled $147,147.76. The difference S2,147.76 was given to San Juan Island Schools Music Director Janet Olsen for use this year. During the 20-year run of the Jazz Fest, funds were given annually to the schools for music education. Hobbel noted the schools have not received any contribution from the association since the festival ended four years.

The stipulations are:

  • invest conservatively

  • increase capital be percentage of the rate of inflation to maintain its value

  • gains above that are to be paid to the Middle and High Schools music department for use specifically in and for that department;

  • department head to determine how the money will be spent - no strings attached

  • annual payment not to exceed 5 percent of capital (allow building up a reserve)

They are hoping to reach 100 members before the membership votes in late August to award one grant recommended by its Steering Committee. SJICF grant applications have been mailed.
