Four days ago restaurateur Giuseppe (Pepi) Roni was found murdered in the kitchen of his renowned New York City eatery, La Sperenza. Pepi has been shot in the back with his own pistol. Tonight his family and friends have gathered to pay their respects to poor Pepi and to eat a feast of Italian food in his honor. One of them is a murderer.
Rocco Scarfazzi: Pepi's twin brother, a tough-talking, no-nonsense, Italian businessman. In addition to his vineyards and real estate holdings, it is rumored Rocco is in the "laundering" business. He had no love for his brother, Pepi, but his reasons are his own… capische? Tara Misu: Tara is Rocco's vivacious young fiancée. She was just an upstairs maid in Rocco's villa until she swept him off his feet. Now Tara keeps a smile on his face and a firm grip on Rocco's assets.
Mama Rosa: Pepi's, grieving widow. For 25 years, Mama Rosa cooked the pasta while Pepi greeted La Sperenza's dinner guests. In all the years they were married, not once did they argue. Did something finally boil over in Rosa's kitchen?
Marco Roni: Pepi and Mama Rosa's only son, Marco was expected to take over the restaurant after his parents retired. Marco hates waiting tables. His goal is to play on a World Cup soccer team but his papa has been keeping him permanently on the bench. |

You are invited to Mama Rosa’s, one of Friday Harbor’s most popular Italian eateries during the 1940s. Four nights ago it was the scene of a murder! Some time between one and two A.M. Mama Rosa’s owner, Giuseppe Roni, was shot and killed! Pepe’s family and a few friends will gather at Mama Rosa’s to pay their respects to this well-loved man… and maybe solve the crime. You are invited to join the fun at Mama Rosa’s Ristorante, better known as the Masonic Lodge at 15 Second Street. Play dates are May 20, 21 and 22. Tickets are $40.00 per person, which includes the play and a gourmet Italian dinner. All proceeds will benefit Dollars for Scholars. Tickets can be purchased at:

Angel: Angel is Pepi and Rosa's beautiful daughter. It was Pepi's dream that his Angel would marry a good Italian boy, have children and carry on the family traditions. Angel has a few fantasies of her own though and one of them is that hunk, Bo Jalais, Mama-mia!
Bo Jalais: Cousin of a cousin of Rocco's. Bo manages the Scarfazzi vineyards. Bo comes from a long line of French wine makers and no one knows 'ze grape like Bo. An important man in the Scarfazzi organization… what could Bo possibly have to whine about? Southern Comfort: He has a southern drawl and a fondness for spirits. He also has visions when he's had enough spirits! He will use those visions and his Dixie wisdom to guide you in solving the crime. Or, is he just trying to cover up his own crime? Lisa Anderson, owner of Friday Harbor Trading Company donated the large stuffed moose as a raffle item to benefit Dollars For Scholars. Tickets were sold by board members throughout the month of December. The drawing was held at Friday Harbor Trading Company on Dec. 23 and John was the winner. The raffle raised about $500 for the Dollars for Scholars Scholarship program. Jensen purchased his winning ticket at intermission during an Alehouse Trivia game. Dollars for Scholars deliversBy Minnie Knych posted 06/07/01
Most attended Friday Harbor High School, a few will graduate from Spring Street School and one was home schooled. Most far exceeded the required number of volunteer hours. All are graduating from high school this year and each will receive a scholarship award of $1000 from Dollars For Scholars. This is Dollars for Scholars San Juan Island’s second year of existence. The mission of our DFS chapter is to provide opportunity for higher education, while promoting community service. We require only two things of any applicant: graduate from high school and complete a minimum number of community service hours during each year of high school. In June of 2000, our first year, we awarded $13,500 in grants to San Juan Island high school students. This year, as a result of this island’s support, Dollars for Scholars San Juan Island will award a total of $16,700. We are proud that even though we have only been in existence for two years, Dollars for Scholars San Juan Island was voted the People’s Choice as Best Civic Charity. The community supports DFS San Juan because of the positive interaction between high school students and members of the community. Because students qualify for Dollars for Scholars assistance by performing community service, anyone, regardless of grade point average, can qualify for a grant. Several students who had not considered themselves candidates for higher education have seized this opportunity to explore options in advanced training. In addition to making opportunities available to a wider range of students, linking the requirement of volunteer and community service with scholarship awards has been of benefit to the community. At the same time, it has resulted in students becoming more aware not only of the value of community service, but the intrinsic rewards of volunteerism. To further increase student awareness and participation in our program Dollars for Scholars board members have established the awarding of "bankable" grants to a freshman and a sophomore at the awards assembly. The teachers are given the opportunity to choose a deserving freshman and sophomore to receive the award. This year, freshman, Mary Pemberton and sophomore Maggie English each received a grant of $350 which will be held in trust and added to their Dollars for Scholars award in their senior year. (See story below). The success of the Dollars for Scholars program is due to the fact that a broad range of the community benefits from Dollars for Scholars volunteers. In order to complete the requirement of community service, students interact with the members of almost every non-profit service group in the community. The students gain self-confidence and experience the intrinsic reward of volunteerism. The community members see teen-agers in a favorable light. Our community is richer for the time these students have taken to make a contribution. In return, the community has been generous in its support of Dollars for Scholars, allowing us to raise the amount of our award to $1000 this year. The Dollars for Scholars board wishes to thank everyone who contributed to make these scholarship grants possible. If you would like more information about how you can contribute or become a member of Dollars for Scholars, please call Jim Knych at 360.378.3600 or Lee Anderson at 360.378.1391.
