Saturday night, June 5, 2004, Friday Harbor Laboratories held its 4th annual 'Jazz at the Labs' - an evening of food, fun and music. Proceeds benefit the Friday Harbor Laboratories K-12 programs in the San Juan Island elementary, middle and high Schools and the Spring Street School.

After dinner, Chimera from Seattle performed. The group was led by Ron Howell who is the president of Washington Research Foundation. The organization manages intellectual property and helps research institutions capture value from their emerging technologies. "WRF exploits technology to make money to put back into the University of Washington," Howell said.

Robert Schwartzberg, director of Development at FH UW Labs said, "Magical things are happening. About half the research (at the labs) has medical payoff down the road."

The Labs K-12 Outreach Program connect students in San Juan Island school district schools, Spring Street School and on Lopez Island with the Labs. They work on science projects with researchers from the labs. The goal is to "infect them at an early age with curiosity," said Schwartzberg.

Program coordinator Jennifer Rogers said through the K-12 program students are involved in relevant studies. "They are involved in real studies in the real world,"she said. Last year 825 students were in the program. That translated into 5,625 student/scientist contact hours. More than 100 parents were involved. Many helped transport the students to the various locations.

The program received support from the Women's Fund, the San Juan Community Fund, and the Howard Hughes Fund.

This year's "Jazz at the Labs" was co-sponsored by Frontier Building Supply, D.A. Davidson - Libby Thompson - Financial Consultant, San Juan Propane, Islanders Insurance, IPS-Island Petroleum Services, the San Juan Masonic Lodge #175 and Wells Fargo Bank.

Echinoderms were the "visitors of the month" in Friday Harbor Elementary Schools third grade classes. Each group of five children had a small plastic aquarium and sea stars, sand dollars, and sea cucumbers to investigate.

University of Washington Friday Harbor Labs and San Juan Island Schools K-12 Marine Science Program provides monthly lessons on invertebrates. As a final link in the education chain, the students will present what they have learned this fall to the first-graders.

In October, the program began with basic lesson on how the school salt water aquarium provides a habitat for various marine animals. The third graders are responsible for monitoring the aquarium each day. A team of two students keep records on the water temperature, air temperature, and the PH levels as well as write daily observations.

In November, the topic was plankton. FH Labs scientists brought in zooplankton and phytoplankton which were viewed with a video microscope. This lesson builds an understanding about animals and plants at the bottom of the food chain.

The program is part of a partnership between the UW FH Labs and the San Juan Island School District.
