Structure fire in Sunshine Alley extinguished

posted 03/14/02 Margarite Jennings opened the door of her business on Sunshine Alley this morning and found black smoke curling over the floor. San Juan County Fire District No. 3 firefighters Nate Rogers and Harry See extinguished the fire in the small blue house in Sunshine Alley. Friday Harbor Fire Chief Bob Low said another two minutes and the whole building would have been on fire.
See and Rogers entered the smoke-filled building under blind conditions. "We went towards the densest smoke, saw a glow and hit it," See said. Flames shot up and curled over their heads and then the fire was out. The wall in the back bathroom was burned through. Workmen had been renovating the bathroom yesterday.
Jennings has run her 12-year-old business, Silkskin International, out of the building for the past 18 months.

FH firefighters help Cassie the Clinging Cat

posted 02/08/02 The crew of Friday Harbor Fire Department's new ladder truck gained additional experience Thursday, Feb. 7, 2002. The firefighters helped save Cassie the Cat from a 40-feet perch in a fir tree.
Cassie climbed the tree the day before and the terrified feline "froze to the tree," said Friday Harbor Fire Chief Bob Low. Friday Harbor's firefighters normally don't help cats out of trees but made an exception since Clinging Cassie was not budging.
The Town of Friday Harbor dispatched their ladder crew after hearing of Cassie's predicament. The cat wasn't so keen about a helmeted stranger appearing at her level. She panicked and fell more than halfway to the ground. Cassie slowed her fall by clinging to a bough. She dropped the rest of the way and darted off.
A few minutes later Cassie was being comforted by her owner Tracie Hornung and the firefighters.

Residents of the Mosswood Apartment building escaped with not much more than the clothes on their backs after a fire destroyed the eight-unit apartment building this morning.
Chris Axtman who lived with her family on the third floor said her stepson's dog saved the family. "Samson wouldn't stop barking," she said. Her husband Peter opened the curtains and saw smoke. Chris grabbed a box of photos, her boots, her bible and her glasses and ran with her family and the pit bull (pictured with firefighter Robin Dyer) down the stairs. The stairway collapsed just after they reached the ground.

Town Fire Department Needs Your Help
By Friday Harbor Fire Chief Bob Low
posted 10/12/00
Town of Friday Harbor Fire Chief Bob Low is looking for help in the following areas: updating the statistical data acquired over the last two years and creating a new filing system. There is also a need for volunteers to help with station and minor vehicle maintenance.
The volunteers would not be required to fight fires but would become auxiliary firefighters. This is a chance to join the fire fighters in community
service. The only requirement is a desire to help in one of the above
areas. A schedule will be created to fit each volunteer's schedule.
Chief Low states, "There are many experienced folks living in our
community that have skills learned in prior jobs that could help us a great
deal." For more information call the Chief at 360.378.4183. Any one who would like to become a fire fighter should also call this number.-->
