The Orcas Island Fire Department responded to a report of an "unknown fire" in the Westsound area on Tuesday, October 29. The initial report was toned out at 10:03 am. Ian Wareham, the captain of the Westsound Station, responded directly from his home to find the MacGillivary home on fire. He quickly removed the homeowner, Don McGilvery, to safety and reported smoke showing from the roof, eaves and upper windows.

Westsound Engine 22 arrived on the scene within 11 minutes of the page to find the upper floor totally involved in fire. A total of 31 volunteers responded with four additional engines, a water tender, the rescue rig and Aid 21.

However, due to the age of the structure, long, narrow driveway, high winds and water resource challenges, the home was a total loss. Department members remained on the scene for nearly five hours. The fire department auxiliary team responded with water, food and dry clothing for the firefighters.

"Firefighters respond to save lives and property so it is very difficult to accept the loss of the house." said Chief Gary Bennett. Property damage was contained to the structure and despite the winds and drier than usual weather, the surrounding fields and brush did not catch fire.

The homestead was built in the early 1900's. The cause was determined to be from a chimney fire.
