Fire Chief Gary Bennett's Report for December 2002

Emergency Responses: There were a total of 26 emergency responses for the month, 10 fire and 16 EMS. The fire calls included 3 alarm activations, 2 motor vehicle accidents, a vehicle fire, a chimney fire, a burn investigation, a medical assist and an explosion injury. This last was cause by a worker spraying a highly flammable cleaning agent into a clothes dryer motor. The explosion actually blew the fire out. This call was generated by the alarm company, which goes to prove we must take alarms seriously. This gives a year end total of 486 calls, 149 fire and 337 EMS. This compares with last years total of 438 calls, 101 fire and 337 EMS. The big jump was in the fire divisions call volume. The increase in the fire calls was primarily generated by both residential and commercial fire alarms and requests for smoke and burn investigations.

Training: Fire training for the month was suspended. Station 24 did conduct their own drill involving basic skills.

Apparatus and Equipment: Tender 23 had an on-board air compressor installed and minor electrical issue repaired. Major repairs to Engine 27 were completed. Engine 21 is awaiting parts for one of the electric control valves. Command 21 was sent off island for repair to the electric controllers and sensors on the four wheel drive system.

Facilities: Station 25 had base boards and door molding completed. The damaged bay door was also repaired and we received a check from our insurance company.

Public Education and Fire Prevention: The smoke detector battery trade-out for the school children was completed. The program is now being opened to any islander for a direct free trade-out for a new smoke detector battery. Just bring in an old battery and receive a new one free. This program is funded by a grant from the Washington State Fire Fighters Association.

Max completed the end of year slide show for the awards banquet. It was outstanding. The annual drill and event calendar was completed.

Personnel: Captain Buddy Wright returned from a leave of absence and was transferred from Station 21 to Station 25 effective December 1st. Paul Spencer is assigned as Captain for Station 21 effective January 1st. Firefighter Dani Becker is transferred from Station 21 to Station 25. We ended the month and year with 8 employees, 48 volunteer firefighters (2 on leave of absence), 34 EMT-Bs of which 11 are also firefighters. We ended the month and year with 69 active volunteers.

Miscellaneous: The Volunteer Association's annual awards banquet was held on December 5th at Station 21. Over 180 people attended. The award winners for the year 2002 are: Station of the Year, Station 21; Firefighter of the Year, Rick Anda; Fire Officer of the Year, Geoff Schussler; EMT of the Year, Ravin Williams. A new award was presented this year for the individuals that have made over 1000 responses in their career as a volunteer. We have accurate records from 1985. Prior history is not available. The lone recipient was Rich Madan at 1087 calls. This does not account for the calls he made from 1970 when he joined the District to 1985. Hopefully others will qualify soon. A big thank you to the Volunteer Association for a wonderful banquet and congratulations to all the award winners.
