Father and son firefighters honored

A father and son took home two of the major awards at the San Juan Island Fire Department’s 22nd annual banquet last week at the Roche Harbor Pavilion. Nearly 100 firefighters and their guests paid tribute to the 2006 contributions of all of the firefighters and support staff.

Jerry Henderson was named Officer of the Year and his son Michael Henderson was named the Rescue Technician of the Year. Rescue techs acquire additional training for responding to motor vehicle accidents and operating the Jaws of Life.


The following other firefighters were honored for their service in 2006:

  • Firefighter of the Year – Doug Maya

  • Rookie of the Year – David Howitt

  • Support Volunteer of the Year – Tom Odegard

The following firefighter of the year station awards were given:

  • Station 31 (Mullis St.) – Doug Maya

  • Station 33 (Little Mountain) – Jack Casey

  • Station 34/35 (Sunset Point/ Roche Harbor) – David Howitt, Jason Wood

  • Station 36 (Eagle Crest) – Brent Johnson

Dave Smith received the Smokey Bear Award for all of his work in public education, including transporting the Children’s Safety House to and from Burlington.

In another tribute, Peter Kilpatrick was honored for serving with the department for 20 years and Chris Guidotti for 10 years of service. Robert Demar recently retired after 17 years with the department, while Albert Olson was recognized for being in the fire service overall for 40 years.

The San Juan Island Fire Department would also like to recognize the Friday Harbor Fire Department for providing a crew covering an initial response in case of a call during our banquet.

PRESS RELEASE: Francis and Rebecca Smith were honored with the highest awards at San Juan Island Fire Department's 21st annual banquet Saturday evening at the Roche Harbor Pavilion. About 100 people, including firefighters and their guests, joined together to pay tribute.

The husband and wife team took home three awards. Captain Francis Smith received the Officer of the Year award. Firefighter Rebecca Smith was named the department's Firefighter of the Year and the Rescue Technician of the Year. The Smiths were also recognized for contributing 10 years of service to the San Juan Island Fire Department.

The following other firefighters were honored for their service in 2005:

  • Rookie of the Year - Patrick Merlino

  • Support Volunteer of the Year - Connie Odegard

The following firefighter of the year station awards were given:

  • Station 31(Mullis St.) - Kyle Davies

  • Station 33 (Little Mountain) - Joe Cooper

  • Station 34/35 (Sunset Point/ Roche Harbor) - Rick Prescott

  • Station 36 (Eagle Crest) - Grant Calverley

  • Training Officer's Award of Excellence - Michael Henderson

In another tribute, Ellis Cropper was honored for serving with the department for 15 years. Those who have been with the department for ten years include:

  • Shaun Armstrong,

  • Mike Biggers,

  • Kyle Davies,

  • Harry See,

  • Dave Smith,

  • Francis Smith

  • Rebecca Smith.

San Juan Island Fire Department held its 19th annual awards banquet Saturday evening at the San Juan Golf and Country Club honoring outstanding firefighters of 2003. Nearly 100 people, including firefighters and their guests, joined together to pay tribute.

The following firefighters were honored:

  • Officer of the Year - Tom Odegard

  • Firefighter of the Year - Paul Smith

  • Rookie of the Year - Jerry Henderson

  • Rescue Technician of the Year - Taine Pyle

  • Support Volunteer of the Year - Connie Odegard

The following station awards were given:

  • Station 31(Mullis St.) - Taine Pyle

  • Station 32 (Cape San Juan) - Dan Tracy

  • Station 33 (Little Mountain) - Lunnette Higdon-Hertel

  • Station 34/35 (Sunset Point/ Roche Harbor) - Rick Prescott

  • Station 36 (Eagle Crest) - Chris Wisniewski

In another tribute, Assistant Chief Brad Creesy and Firefighter Don McLaskey were recognized for being with the department for 20 years. Creesy and McLaskey, serving San Juan Island since 1983, have been with the department longer than anyone else.

Other milestones include the following firefighters who have reached the15-year mark: Frank Chaffee, Tom Eades, Jim Guard and Rick Prescott. Those who have been with the department for five years are Billy Hoppe and Paul Smith.

The department also thanked Commissioner Rebecca Smith for six years of dedicated service during her term on the Fire Commission Board.

A few retired firefighters were also in attendance including Bill Harrah and his wife, Patricia; Bill Matheson and his wife, Lois; and Frank Miner and his wife, Shirley.

San Juan County Fire District #3 held its 18th annual awards banquet December 13 at the San Juan Golf and Country Club honoring outstanding firefighters of 2002.

Eighty-three firefighters and their guests joined together to pay tribute.

The following firefighters were honored:

  • Officers of the Year – Chris Guidotti and Noel Monin.
  • Firefighter of the Year – Shaun Armstrong.
  • Rookie of the Year – Taine Pyle.
  • Rescue Technician of the Year – Paul Smith.

  • Station 33 – Joe Cooper.
  • Station 34 – Joan Byrne.
  • Station 35 – Rick Prescott.
  • Station 36 – Ellis Cropper.
  • Station 37 – Dawn Baireuther.

In another tribute, the fall recruit class presented a special award to Battalion Chief Brad Creesy in appreciation for his support and leadership in training the first Firefighter 1 Class, an internationally recognized certification. This class represents the most comprehensive recruit training to date and the first time that the certification examination has been offered in San Juan County.
