Jensen Appointed as Fire Commissioner

John Jensen has been appointed to San Juan County Fire District No. 3 commission. He will fill out the last year of Jay Hurlburt's term. Hurlburt resigned after moving out of the district. Jensen's position will be up for election in 2002.

Jensen has 32 years of fire experience with the National Park Service, serving as incident commander on wildland fires and as chief in structural fires.will be filling the last year of the six-year term. He has also been a nationally certified EMT for 20 years, and has served as the San Juan County Deputy Fire Marshal and investigator for four years.

Fire commissioners, Chair Rebecca Smith and Vice-chair Albert Olson, approved the appointment at the November 15 meeting. Jensen will be sworn in at the next fire commission meeting at 3:30 p.m. December 13, 2000 in the District office at 310 Carter Avenue in Friday Harbor.

Fire District Commissioner Hurlburt Resigns

Jay Hurlburt resigned from San Juan County Fire District No.3 on October 11, 2000. He is moving onboard his boat, which will be moored inside the Town of Friday Harbor. Commissioners must be residents of the district.

Hurlburt served as fire commissioner since 1995. His history with the district includes service as a paramedic. The aid unit used to be operated by the fire district.

The Board of Fire Commissioners are seeking a replacement to serve out the remaining year of his term. Letters of interest will be accepted until the next regularly scheduled meeting of the board on November 8, 2000.
