Sheriff's dispatchers received reports of a large amount of smoke rising from the north side of Mount Young about 7 p.m. When the first firefighters arrived the fire had consumed an acre of brush near a structure. A gravel road and the practice fire break helped contain the blaze. About 20 wild land firefighters from Olympic National Park -- who were limbing trees and clearing brush for San Juan Island National Historical Park at American Camp assisted in containing the Mount Young fire. "It was real handy, otherwise we'd have been there all night long," said District No. 3 Chief Bill McLaughlin. |
