A man reportedly was working on his boat shortly before a fire started which ended up boat and the boat moored next to his on D-dock at Roche Harbor Marina. His boat sank, the 35-foot Carver adjacent to his burned to the waterline. No cause for the fire was determined as of Wednesday evening.

Twenty San Juan Island District 3 firefighters responded to the scene, Friday Harbor fire boat Confidence responded with a crew which were instrumental in knocking down the waterside of the fire. The U.S. Coast Guard responded as did Vessel Assist which removed the boats on each side of the burning vessels. Vessel Assist also made sure the hull of the Carver was stablizied.

Troy Buck of Roche Harbor staff saw the smoke, ran down to the dock, told the person running up to dial 9-1-1. He used the 100-pound fire extinquisher, started the suppression system. District 3 Fire Assistant Chief Brad Creesy said, "Roche Harbor staff did an excellent job, they had everyone evacuated. They helped us set up and got out of the way."

No one was injured in the fire. San Juan EMS was on the scene.

Creesy said, "This is the scariest type of fire because of the exposure, one of the things you have nightmares about."

The sunken boat barely visible.

Fumes from the burnt fiberglass were in the air and oil could be seen on the water above the sunken boat.
