Local firefighters attend National Fire Academy

posted 03/01/00
Five firefighters from the San Juan Island Fire Department attended the National Fire Academy this month. The academy, a branch of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), provides education and training for fire officers from across the country.

Captain Francis Smith of Cape San Juan Station along with Lieutenant Kyle Davies of Roche Harbor and Captain Harry See of Sunset Point attended the Incident Command Operations class. This six-day class teaches strategy and tactics of response to first alarm fires. The class is intensive with several days of computer modeled simulations.

Lieutenant Joaquin Hubbard attended the Arson Detection for Company Officers class. This is also a six-day class. The class teaches front line fire officers how to determine whether a fire was caused by arson, and how to investigate the fire.

Firefighter Carolyn Spanier attend the Community Education Leadership class. This class focuses on fire prevention in the community. The fire department is hoping to increase efforts to prevent fires. "The best time to fight a fire is before it starts."
