Members of three tribes with connections to the San Juan Islands - Swinomish, Lummi and Samish - paddled canoes to Lopez and San Juan islands this week as part of the Intertribal Canoe Society's 2004 Canoe Journey. The group landed at Odlin Park on July 27, 2004. They traveled to Roche Harbor on Wednesday and left Thursday morning headed for East Saanich, B.C.

This year's canoe journey was titled "Journey with Our Ancestors." According to the Canoe Journey 2004 Web site, the journey "is not a vacation, in any sense of the word, It is a JOURNEY, an opportunity for personal growth, a collection of memories, and truly unforgettable experiences."

More information and The 10 Rules of the Canoe are available online.

More than 100 tribal participants from the Swinomish, Samish, Lummi, and Tulalip tribes are expected to participate in the Anacortes-San Juan-Sidney crossing of the 2004 Canoe Journey "Journey with Our Ancestors." The Intertribal Canoe Society will make stops on Lopez and San Juan Islands.

On July 27 - 29, traditional Native American sea-going canoes will travel through San Juan County waters. The community is welcome to attend all canoe arrival and departure ceremonies and community potluck dinners. The tribal canoes will travel:

Tuesday, July 27, 2004

  • from Anacortes to Odlin Park on Lopez Island

Wednesday, July 28

  • from Lopez Island to Roche Harbor, San Juan Island

Thursday, July 29, 2004

  • across Haro Strait to Sidney, British Columbia.

The San Juan crossing is one leg of a larger canoe Journey that ends August 4, 2004 in Chemainus, British Columbia.
