$211,000 grant awarded to inventory eelgrass beds

posted 05/31/02
The State of Washington Salmon Recovery Funding Board has awarded the Friends of the San Juans a $211,000 grant. Friends Executive Director Stephanie Buffum said the grant will be used to support the continuation of Friends’ Salmon Recovery Project, a major initiative to help restore depleted salmon stocks.

The Salmon Recovery Funding Board's mission is to support salmon recovery by funding habitat protection and restoration projects, and related programs and activities that produce sustainable and measurable benefits for the fish and their habitat. Mapping of San Juan County’s nearshore eelgrass beds and production of a comprehensive eelgrass inventory will be accomplished with the grant. The inventory will be used to identify eelgrass restoration sites, identify targets for land acquisition, increase public education for salmon recovery, and support salmon habitat protection strategies. This project represents the second phase of the Forage Fish Spawning Habitat Assessment Project already undertaken by the Friends of the San Juans and San Juan County.

"San Juan County should be proud of the work we are contributing toward statewide salmon restoration. Salmon restoration begins on our shoreline by identifying and protecting important salmon prey habitats," said Buffum.

The project is collaboration between the San Juan Marine Resource Committee and Friends of the San Juans, and the University of Washington. Other grant contributors to this project include the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, Marine Ecosystem Health Program, and the Northwest Straits Commission.
