Hospice of San Juan elects board

posted 12/13/05
PRESS RELEASE: Tuesday, December 6, volunteers and guests of Hospice of San Juan met at the Grange Hall for their annual meeting and potluck. Carol Christianson, Eli Dayton and their crew created a festive holiday atmosphere with greenery, ornaments, and candles. In typical island style, the volunteers brought more food than could be consumed.

After the meal, an election was held to fill five vacancies on the Board of Directors. Elected to the board were:

  • Colette Landerville, Business Manager at False Bay Farms and former President of the Hospice Board;

  • Michelle Rath, Director of Nursing at Islands Convalescent Center;

  • Allison Shadday, Certified Social Worker and hospice volunteer;

  • Phebe Smith, local business woman and longtime hospice volunteer and board member;

  • Connie Wargo, nurse and business woman who is also a hospice volunteer.

There are three other members of the Hospice of San Juan Board whose terms have not expired. They are:

  • David Bentley, educator/coach/administrator and longtime hospice volunteer;

  • Rona Cameron, home health worker and hospice volunteer;

  • Eli Dayton, retired emergency physician and hospice volunteer.

Hospice of San Juan offers free care from trained volunteers to the terminally and chronically ill as well as respite care to their caregivers on San Juan Island. Hospice has an inventory of medical equipment/supplies that are available on a loan basis at no charge. In addition, Hospice facilitates a weekly, drop-in grief support group at the Mullis Community Senior Center. For information about any of these services, call 472-0322.

The next training class will be offered the first two weekends of April, 2005.

New time for grief support group

posted 04/01/05
The free grief support group sponsored by Hospice of San Juan now meets weekly from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Monday evenings. Meetings are held in the lounge of the Mullis Community Senior Center.

The group is facilitated by hospice volunteers and is an open, but confidential, support group for those living through the process of grieving. It is not be a therapy group. Everyone responds to grief in a unique way, yet many of our experiences and challenges are similar. These meetings offer a safe place for those experiencing grief to share their stories.

While most group participants are grieving the death of a family member, a close friend, or a cherished pet, anyone who has experienced any type of loss is welcome. For more information, leave a message with Hospice of San Juan at 472-0322. A volunteer will respond promptly.
