The Bookmark Design Contest kicks off San Juan Island Library's annual Summer Reading Program each year. The theme for the program this year is "Conjure up a Good Book." Weekly programs will be offered Wednesdays from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. at the library. The grand opening program is Sizzling Science with Woody Sobey from the Northwest Invention Center on June 26. Come see a cement block broken on top of your librarian while lying on a bed of nails. Also don’t miss potatoes being launched from a tennis racket.

Young islanders Megan Brown, Duncan MacDougall, Roula Nassrallah, A. J. Serna, Emily Schultz, and Libby Snow are the winners of the 2002 Bookmark Design. Youth Services Librarian Laura Tretter announced the winners, saying: "It was a very tough choice, we had 77 wonderful entries." Children made bookmarks based either on the theme "Conjure Up a Good Book" or based on their love of reading and good books.

Sign up for the Summer Reading Program begins on June 14 at the Library.

Library hours are Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10 AM to 6 PM, Tuesday and Thursday from 10 AM to 8 PM, Saturday from 10 AM to 5 PM and Sunday from 1 PM to 5 PM. Library cards are free to island residents with proof of residency.
