Prizes awarded for Young Adult Fiction Contest winnersPRESS RELEASE: Heaven De La Zerda of Friday Harbor High School won first place in the high school bracket of the San Juan Island Library Young Adult Fiction Contest. She won a round-trip to Seattle from Kenmore Air and three Mariner baseball tickets for her 600-word story "Holocaust." Zach Milkis of Spring Street School won in the middle school division for his story "The Autograph." Zach's prize is a Western Prince Whale Watching trip for two and lunch at Basils. Second and third place high school winners were Danny Olshefsky who won dinner for two at Vinny's and Michael Henderson who won gift certificates to Harbor Bookstore, The Sweet Retreat and the Palace Theatre. Claire Burke received an Honorable Mention. Alaina Schultz, as the second place winner in the Middle School, won a bowling party for four at Paradise Lanes. Third place winner Lizzy Guard received gift certificates to Griffin Bay Bookstore, The Sweet Retreat and the Palace Theatre. The contest sponsored by the San Juan Island Library for the third year was coordinated by Teen Library Assistant Kelsey Kennedy. Judges for this year's contest were Sharon Duncan, author of the Scotia MacKinnon mystery series set in Friday Harbor, and Janet Thomas, teacher of writing and author of "The Battle in Seattle." The Library's contest asked middle schoolers and high school students to finish the phrase: "The minute I stepped off the plane, I realized what I had gotten myself into..." by making it into a 600-word piece of fiction for its annual Young Authors Fiction Contest. Assistant librarian Laura Tretter said the quality of the entries was impressive. "Just take a look at the stories we posted online. These students show a grasp of the language that can only get better as they get older. These kids are real writers." Several dozen kids stepped up to the challenge, and last night the winners were honored at a reading and presentation of the winning entries. Judges Bob Dann, Janet Thomas (author of "The Battle in Seattle: The Story Behind and Beyond the WTO Demonstrations") and Peter Fromm (author of "Whale Tales") chose these stories as the best of the ones submitted: High School:
This year's contest was coordinated by teen library assistant Jacky Elder and Tretter, with the support of language arts teachers at the middle school, the high school, Spring Street School, and Skagit Valley College's Running Start program. First, second, and third place prizes are awarded in each of two divisions: First Prize: For high school division: $50 gift certificate at Downrigger’s and a limo ride from San Juan Taxi for two. For middle school division: A portable CD player from Radio Shack and a $20 certificate from Audio On Demand. Second Prize: For both divisions: Bowling party for four at Paradise Lanes with pizza and drinks from Jimmy’s Paradise Café. Third prize: For high school division: Two movie tickets with drinks and popcorn at the Palace Theater. For middle school division: Gift certificate to the Big Store for two movie rentals and a big pizza. |
Amanda Alps (above) and Christian Carter (below) snared the top spots in the 2004 Young Authors Fiction Contest Wednesday night, sponsored by the San Juan Island Library.
Eva Wingren took second place in the High School division with her entry: "The Journey of a Thousand Miles Begins with a Single Step."
