About ten Lions and other volunteers cleaned up part of South Beach Saturday, March 22, 2003. While buffetted by strong wind, they gathered up several hundred pounds of debris. Recyclables were bagged separately. Old tires, shoes, bottles, cans and chunks of flotation foam were removed from the beach. The cleanup was part of the three day Beach Cleanup organized by the Friends of the San Juans. San Juan Island Lion Curt VanHyning said his group could use more volunteers to sweep two miles of beach on April 22 and May 17.
