San Juan Island Lions Club shopping spree

New dock launched at Egg Lake

Photos by Jim Ricks, John Bostrom and Sharon Kivisto

On Saturday, May 26, 2007 a dock was installed at Egg Lake. For the last several months the dock was being assembled at Larry Wight’s shop under the expert tutelage of Larry Wight, John Bostrom and Jim Ricks. Volunteers from the LEO Club and Island Rec worked hard and tirelessly, cutting, ratcheting and welding it together.

The dock was built in a co-operative effort of Island Rec, the San Juan Island LEO Club and Friday Harbor High School students. Some of the funds came from a Gates Grant administered by high school advisor Larry Wight.

Island Rec initiated this project, under the leadership of Board Commissioner Jim Ricks, earlier this year when repairs to the existing dock were no longer a feasible option. The original dock was built by the Lion’s Club around 1978 and was later replaced by Island Rec and Lions Club.

The new completed dock, expected to last much longer then the original dock, consists of an aluminum ramp, two 6-foot by 15-foot floats, an 8-foot by 18-foot float and swim ladder. Island Rec collaborated with Leos, a youth-based community service group of the Lions Club, andto see this project through.

Total cost of this project was over $8,000. $2,500 was received from the Gates Grant with the balance paid by Island Rec and significant contributions made by Browne Lumber and Williams Enterprise. Egg Lake Dock is the only public dock on San Juan Island that accesses fresh water.

With the help of Williams Enterprises and Browne Lumber the dock was transported to the lake, where it was carefully placed in its new home.

Thanks go to Jim Ricks, Larry Wight, Williams Enterprises, Browne Lumber, Bill Cumming, Scott Zehner (and Ben), Sally Kerr, Steve Buck, John Bostrom and all the young adults who made it happen: Paul, Tucker, Mitchell, Max, Eddie, Joshua, Christine, Hana, Nick and Noe.

Browne's Home Center furnished the truck and driver (Paul) and
Williams Enterprises furnished the boom truck with driver/operator (Adolfo).

Bill Cumming furnished the row boat.

Leo Club provides the muscle for Egg Lake Dock project

Thirty years after the San Juan Lions Club built the original Egg Lake dock, the LEO Club is helping Island Rec and Friday Harbor High School rebuild it. Members of the LEO (Leadership, Experience, Opportunity) Club provided the muscle and skill to construct the two 6-foot by 15-foot floats and a 8-foot by 18-foot float.

Island Rec Board Commissioner Jim Ricks and Larry Wight from FHHS are overseeing the project. Ricks will be teaching at least three of the students how to weld aluminum as they assemble the ramp.

Part of the $8,000 project was financed by a GATES foundation grant. Island Rec is accepting donations for the project. Call 378-4953 for more information.

The Egg Lake dock is just one of the projects the LEO club is working on. Others include participating in a Beach Clean-up at both Jacksons Beach and South Beach, delivering donated wood to those who need it, helping to set-up and serving dinner for the Whale Museum's Greeting Ceremony Fundraising Dinner and Show May 5 at the Mullis Center, and helping out at the Children's Festival on the same day.

On May 12, the club will hold its own fundraiser the Leo Club of San Juan Spring 5-man Scramble at the San Juan Golf and Country Club. The $35 entry fee includes:

  • a 9-hole 2 p.m. shotgun start

  • Hamburger BBQ and awards

  • Kps, Long drive, Accurate Drive, Long putt, least putts

Other optional competitions:

  • Putting contest starts at noon

  • Hit inside the circle at #8

This event is supported by the San Juan Golf and Country Club Men's Club. Organizers are looking for sponsors, awards and auction items for the event. Contact John Towson at 378-3843 for more information.

The LEO (Leadership, Experience, Opportunity) is a service club for youth ages 12 to 18. Lion John Towson began working in February 2006 to start the local club. There are 28 members from Friday Harbor High School and Spring Street School. Youth interested in joining can pick up membership forms at the Friday Harbor High School career center office.
