Canoe journey to stopover on San Juan Island

First annual Eastsound War Canoe races held August 10, 2002

posted 08/12/02
Eastsound became a stop on the War Canoe Race circuit August 10, 2002. The Lummi tribe organized the first annual Eastsound War Canoe races at Waterfront Park.

A blessing was sung before the races began. Willie Jones, tribal chairman said, "We want this to be a start of a bonding, we want this to be a bonding, a long lasting friendship. "

County Commissioners John Evans, Darcie Nielsen and Rhea Miller presented a gift to Jones and other tribal members. Evans used the Lummi word for Eastsound and Orcas Island in his welcoming remarks. "This was the Lummi village site at one time. This is ancient history for the Lummis." He hopes the dramatic legend of the tribes origin at Mount Constitution is included in the Orcas Island Historical Museum.

After the formalities, the races began. Four canoe clubs two from Vancouver Island and two from the mainland participated in the races. The racers paddled 50-foot long canoes around a small island off of Eastsound. Categories included single racers up to 11-man teams.

More information about the Lummis can be found on their WEB SITE
