posted 03/02/01
Get a jump on the summer sailing season by joining the spring sloop sailing class. Anyone age 10 or older who has completed at least one of Island Rec's sloop sailing classes is eligible to participate. This class will focus on increasing the sailor's sloop sailing skills through a variety of games and exercises. Tom Riley is the head instructor. Island Rec's sailing classes are sponsored cooperatively with the San Juan Sailing Foundation.

A Wednesday afternoon and Friday afternoon session are being offered for seven weeks beginning April 4. For registrations received before March 26 the cost for one session is $55 or $110 for both. As space is limited to 12 participants, early registrations is encouraged. After March 26 the cost is $60 and $120. For more information contact Sally Kerr at Island Rec 360.378.4953.

Help Sailing Foundation set a course for the future

The San Juan Sailing Foundation embarked 1989. Twelve years later through foundation-sponsored classes, hundreds of children and adults have learned to sail.

Where is the foundation going the next five or 10 years? Give your input on what has worked, what needs improvement and what should be planned for to make the next decade a success during a town hall-style meeting 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Feb. 17 in Friday Harbor High School Commons. A potluck lunch and social will follow. For more information, call 360.378.4119 or 360.378.8548.

This year the San Juan Island Sailing Foundation celebrates a decade of successful training and education in sailing. The program of this volunteer community service organization began in 1991 with only two classes, Basic and Intermediate Sailing. The program met with great enthusiasm within the community and grew in succeeding years with the addition of more classes. The 2001 summer season, under sponsorship of Island Recreation and with the cooperation of the Sailing Foundation, again will include multiple classes and multiple sessions of most classes. The sailing opportunities will run the gamut from introductory to advanced sailing classes, including racing and cruising. We anticipate some 100 participants.

The Sailing Foundation invites all interested members of the community to a "Town Hall style meeting to discuss the current program and to plan for the future. Bring your interests, comments and suggestions to the meeting 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Feb. 17 in the Friday Harbor High School Commons. In addition, after the discussion, we invite you to a relaxed potluck lunch and social.
