Seven-acre conservation easement
donated on Lopez

posted 12-01-01
Dorothy (Dottie) Greene has donated a conservation easement to the San Juan Preservation Trust on her seven acre wooded waterfront property on Lopez Island. " I fell in love with the property," Greene recalls, when she and her husband were looking for a place to retire thirty-four years ago. " It has a sunset view from a high bluff across the water towards San Juan…there is nothing better."

The easement defines a " woodland natural area" and a " shoreline natural area," which will remain protected wildlife habitat and scenic open space in perpetuity. Greene’s property adjoins that of Charles and Nancy Givens, on which the Givens donated a conservation easement last year. The Greene and Givens easements also adjoin a scenic 40-acre farm, which was protected by a conservation easement donated by the McDermott family in 1995. Taken together, these three easements provide 55 acres of habitat and open space protection on north Lopez.

Greene has enjoyed 33 satisfying years on Lopez, contributing her energy to the Lopez Library and participating in the Birthday Club in support of various community projects. She views her donation of a conservation easement as another way to contribute to the community she loves.
